Disko Bay
Disko Bay is the West Greenland bay region around Ilulissat and Qeqertarsuaq on Disko Island. Travel here to combine icebergs, whales and seasonal activities across several bases.
Understanding Disko Bay
Disko Bay is a region rather than a single destination. It covers the West Greenland waters around Ilulissat and Qeqertarsuaq on Disko Island, among other places. Distances and local transport matter, so it is better to plan the trip around a small number of bases than to treat the entire bay as one excursion area.
Ilulissat is the natural base when the Ilulissat Icefjord is the main reason for travelling. The icefjord has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. Icebergs calved there move out through Disko Bay, and the largest can rise more than 150 metres above the waterline. In summer, around a hundred large icebergs gather near the fjord mouth. Their positions and the views from land and water change as the ice moves.
Qeqertarsuaq provides a separate base on Disko Island. Combining it with Ilulissat can work, but the journey between the two needs its own place in the itinerary. Weather, ice and local connections can affect how much of the region it is practical to cover.
For a first visit, we generally recommend choosing one main base and then deciding whether the trip is long enough for a second stay elsewhere in the bay. This is more robust than arranging several short stops with little room for changes.
How to get to Disko Bay
Nuuk’s international airport opened on 28 November 2024, with direct jet service to and from Copenhagen. There are five flights a week, increasing to six over Christmas and New Year and eight a week in summer. From Nuuk, Air Greenland flies onward to Ilulissat and Aasiaat, both of which can form part of a Disko Bay itinerary.
Ilulissat’s own airport opens during 2026, with direct Copenhagen flights on Wednesdays. The schedule increases to Mondays and Wednesdays over Christmas and New Year and during the winter season from 1 to 27 March 2027. This makes it possible to begin the trip in Ilulissat, but the limited operating days still need to be built into the itinerary.
If travelling through Nuuk, a stay in the capital can be added on the outward or return journey. We recommend treating activities in the two regions separately when planning. Dog sledding, for example, does not exist in Nuuk, while it is a regional winter activity in Disko Bay north of the Arctic Circle.
Travel between individual places in Disko Bay must also be arranged separately. Fix the long flight sectors first, then fit accommodation and activities around them. We advise leaving time between separate connections rather than making the rest of the trip depend on a tight transfer. Arctic weather and local conditions can affect the schedule, and an additional night is often more useful than an itinerary with no margin.
Things to do in Disko Bay
Icebergs and the Ilulissat Icefjord
The ice links the Ilulissat Icefjord with the wider bay. Icebergs calve from the icefjord and drift through the surrounding waters, so seeing them is not restricted to one viewpoint. Ilulissat is still the practical starting point for understanding the location of the icefjord and seeing the area near its mouth.
A boat tour among the icebergs gives a different perspective from staying on land. The price depends on the length of the tour, the type of boat and what is included, and it varies widely; our article about prices in Greenland covers the observed price levels for boat tours with source and date. Before booking, check the departure point, length, clothing requirements and terms for schedule changes.
Warm clothing is necessary on the water even in summer. Conditions on a boat can feel different from those in town, and a two-hour trip requires more than ordinary indoor summer clothing. We recommend layers, a windproof outer layer, a hat and gloves, including on days that feel mild on land.
Whale watching
Humpback whales are present in Disko Bay from mid-June to August. Choose this period if whale watching is a priority. Roughly 15 whale species occur in Greenlandic waters overall, but that does not mean every species should be expected on a particular trip in Disko Bay.
Whales move freely, so no departure can guarantee a specific sighting. If there are several days available, schedule whale watching near the beginning of the stay rather than on the final possible day. That leaves room to adjust the programme if local conditions require a change.
Whale watching and iceberg cruises can both be included in a summer itinerary, but they are not necessarily the same activity. Read the individual tour description and confirm whether its main focus is whales, icebergs or a combination of the two.
Dog sledding
Disko Bay lies north of the Arctic Circle and within the part of Greenland where dog sledding is permitted. The general season runs from January to April.
Dog sledding is legally restricted to West Greenland north of the Arctic Circle, plus East Greenland. This boundary is known as the dog line. Dog sledding does not exist in Nuuk, Qaqortoq or anywhere else in South Greenland.
If dog sledding is the main purpose of the trip, travel between January and April. A winter visit requires more attention to clothing and the daily schedule than a summer visit. Check the duration and physical requirements before choosing a tour. A short introduction and a longer journey are different types of activity even though both may be described as dog sledding.
Northern lights
The northern lights are visible from September to April. Autumn, winter and early spring are therefore the relevant periods for combining them with other seasonal activities. From January to April, the northern lights season overlaps with the general dog-sledding season in Disko Bay.
Northern lights viewing depends on darkness and suitable weather. We recommend treating it as something that may happen across several evenings rather than as an activity assigned to one exact time. A stay of several nights provides more flexibility than a single overnight stop.
Hiking and time on land
Hiking and shorter walks are relevant when the terrain and weather are suitable. Around Ilulissat, time on land can be combined with views towards the icefjord. Staying in Qeqertarsuaq allows travellers to use Disko Island as their base. Select routes according to your own ability and check local conditions before setting out.
A regional itinerary does not need a scheduled activity every day. Time without a fixed plan is useful because ice, visibility and weather can alter what makes sense on a particular day. It also provides space to move a boat trip or another outdoor activity if necessary.
Best time to visit Disko Bay
Choose the month according to the activity that matters most. There is no single season that includes humpback whales, dog sledding and northern lights at the same time.
From mid-June to August, humpback whales are present in Disko Bay. Summer also has very long periods of daylight, making it easier to fit boat trips and time outdoors into the programme. Around a hundred large icebergs can gather at the mouth of the Ilulissat Icefjord during summer. The ice remains in motion, however, so its position will not be identical from one day or year to the next.
September to December marks the transition into the darker part of the year. The northern lights season starts in September, but the dog-sledding season has not yet begun. This period is therefore better suited to travellers who prioritise northern lights and a less crowded daily schedule over whale watching or dog sledding.
January to April is the relevant period for dog sledding, while northern lights remain visible through April. March falls within this overlap. It also coincides with the expanded direct Copenhagen–Ilulissat flight schedule from 1 to 27 March 2027, when flights operate on Mondays and Wednesdays.
May is outside the general dog-sledding season and comes before the humpback whale period begins in mid-June. It can still be a possible month for travel, but anyone whose trip depends on one particular activity should choose a month within its documented season.
Our practical seasonal priorities are:
- Choose mid-June to August for humpback whales and summer boat trips.
- Choose September to April if the northern lights are the main purpose of the trip.
- Choose January to April for dog sledding in the region.
- Stay several nights in one place when the programme depends on weather and outdoor activities.
Where to stay in Disko Bay
Ilulissat is the most practical main base if the icefjord, icebergs and boat trips are central to the itinerary. It can be reached through Nuuk or, after Ilulissat’s new airport opens during 2026, on the direct service from Copenhagen operating on the specified days.
Qeqertarsuaq is relevant for travellers who want to spend part of the trip on Disko Island. We do not recommend treating it as a brief addition without allowing time for transport and at least a few consecutive nights. Each additional base ties more of the itinerary to connections, check-in and check-out.
Choose accommodation according to location, room type and meal arrangements rather than the view alone. Check whether the room has a private or shared bathroom, which meals are included and where planned tours begin. In winter, a short distance between the accommodation and the main meeting points is a practical advantage.
For a first trip to Disko Bay, one main base is usually the simplest option. Two bases make sense when the stay is long enough to retain full activity days in both places. A series of single-night stops leaves less room for schedule changes.
Practical advice for a first visit
Disko Bay has an Arctic climate, and clothing needs to be adjustable during the day. We recommend several layers rather than one heavy jacket: a base layer, a warm middle layer, and a wind- and water-resistant outer layer. A hat, gloves and sturdy footwear are useful on boat trips and during longer periods outdoors. Winter requires proper winter clothing rather than light clothing intended for transitional weather.
Pack medication and other essentials in hand luggage. A basic set of warm clothing should also stay in hand luggage when the journey includes several flights. Keep the final day before the return journey relatively open, particularly if the trip home depends on several separate connections.
Avoid filling every day from morning to evening. A free half-day or full day can be used to reschedule an activity, take a walk or follow local advice based on the conditions. This is more practical than a plan in which one change affects every later reservation.
Disko Bay should not be planned as though it were one town with short distances between all points of interest. Ilulissat, Qeqertarsuaq and the other parts of the bay are separate places, and transport is part of the itinerary. Decide which two or three experiences have the highest priority before choosing the month, base and number of nights.
For a summer trip, icebergs, boat tours and whale watching will usually determine the timing. In winter, dog sledding and northern lights are the main seasonal considerations. Once the season has been selected around the primary activity, the remaining planning is more straightforward, and there is less risk of arriving outside the period for the experience in question.
