Ilulissat beside Disko Bay and large icebergs
West Greenland

Ilulissat

Ilulissat is a West Greenland town on Disko Bay, at the mouth of the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord. Visit to see the ice from land and water, look for humpback whales in summer, or go dog sledding from January to April.

Ilulissat and the Icefjord

Ilulissat is in West Greenland, on Disko Bay where the Ilulissat Icefjord meets the bay. This location makes the town a practical base for seeing the same geography from several perspectives: from land, from a boat near the ice, and farther out in Disko Bay.

The Ilulissat Icefjord has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. In summer, around a hundred large icebergs can gather at the mouth of the fjord. Some rise more than 150 metres above the waterline. Those figures are useful when viewing the ice from land, where distance can make separate icebergs appear compact or almost flat. Each has its own height, shape and position in the water.

We suggest treating the town, the Icefjord and Disko Bay as three connected parts of the visit. Views from land provide an overview of the fjord and the surrounding terrain. A boat brings you closer to water level and makes the spaces between the icebergs easier to judge. The bay offers another perspective, particularly when humpback whales are present.

Ilulissat is north of the Arctic Circle. That matters not only for the climate but also for dog sledding. Under the legal restriction known as the dog line, dog sledding is permitted in West Greenland north of the Arctic Circle and in East Greenland. Ilulissat is therefore within the area where the activity is legally practised. Dog sledding does not exist in Nuuk, Qaqortoq or anywhere else in South Greenland.

How to get to Ilulissat

Ilulissat gets its own airport during 2026. Direct flights from Copenhagen will operate on Wednesdays. Over Christmas and New Year, the schedule increases to Mondays and Wednesdays. The same Monday and Wednesday schedule applies during the winter season from 1 to 27 March 2027. If you are travelling in one of these periods, check the exact dates rather than assuming there will be a flight every day.

The alternative is to travel through Nuuk. Nuuk International Airport opened on 28 November 2024 and has direct jet service from Copenhagen five times a week, increasing to six flights a week over Christmas and New Year and eight in summer. Air Greenland operates domestic flights from Nuuk to Ilulissat, allowing an itinerary to combine an international flight to Nuuk with a domestic connection onward.

For journeys involving more than one flight, we prefer to leave some room around the most important plans. Greenland has an Arctic climate, and weather can affect air travel. This is especially relevant if a particular boat tour, whale safari or dog-sledding trip is the main reason for visiting. Where the itinerary allows, schedule that activity after the first day rather than immediately following the planned arrival.

It is also worth distinguishing between summer frequencies and winter schedules. A direct flight on Wednesday does not necessarily make Wednesday the right travel day for every itinerary. The decision depends on how many full days you want in Ilulissat and which activity you are travelling for. Dog sledding requires a visit between January and April, while a trip planned around humpback whales belongs between mid-June and August.

Boat tours and the Ilulissat Icefjord

A boat tour in the Ilulissat Icefjord or Disko Bay is the direct way to see the ice from water level. Tours differ in duration and purpose, so first decide whether you want a short introduction or a longer period on the water. Our separate guide to Ilulissat boat tours covers the activity in more detail.

The price of a boat tour depends on the length and content of the trip, so compare the actual time on the water rather than looking only at the price; our article about prices in Greenland covers the observed price levels for boat tours from Ilulissat with source and date.

Distance and weather affect how the ice appears. From land, a large iceberg may look close to the fjord mouth. From a boat, the amount of water around it becomes clearer. In summer, around a hundred large icebergs may gather at the mouth, and some can stand more than 150 metres above the waterline. The measurements are most useful as a way to understand the scale of what you are looking at.

If the Icefjord is the main purpose of the trip, we would not make every part of the stay depend on one scheduled boat departure. Keep an alternative day available where possible. Weather and conditions on the water are practical parts of planning in an Arctic coastal area, not details that can be removed by booking in advance.

A general Icefjord boat tour and a whale safari should also be treated as separate activities. Although both take place on the water, their focus is different. An Icefjord tour concentrates on the ice and the mouth of the fjord. A whale safari spends time in Disko Bay with humpback whales as the intended focus.

Whale safaris in Disko Bay

Humpback whales are present in Disko Bay from mid-June to August. If whale watching is the priority, this is the period to choose. Roughly 15 whale species occur in Greenlandic waters overall, but that does not mean every species is present in Disko Bay at the same time or that any particular animal will be seen on a particular departure.

Our separate guide to whale safaris from Ilulissat is the place to continue if the stay is being planned around time on the bay. We recommend keeping more than one possible day available when whales are the main reason for travelling. Both the animals and the weather determine what happens on a safari, and a date on the calendar cannot guarantee a sighting.

This is also why we keep whale safaris separate from ordinary boat tours in our planning advice. A traveller interested mainly in ice may prefer to spend the available boat time near the fjord mouth. Someone travelling specifically between mid-June and August for humpback whales may want the itinerary to prioritise Disko Bay instead.

Dog sledding in Ilulissat

The dog-sledding season in Ilulissat runs from January to April. Because the town is north of the Arctic Circle, it is on the permitted side of the statutory dog line. The legal area covers West Greenland north of the Arctic Circle as well as East Greenland.

This distinction matters when comparing itineraries within Greenland. A planned dog-sledding trip cannot simply be moved to Nuuk, Qaqortoq or South Greenland if the programme changes, because dog sledding is not legally practised in those places. If a trip combines Ilulissat and Nuuk, the dog-sledding portion must take place in Ilulissat.

Our separate guide to dog sledding in Ilulissat provides more focused information about this winter activity. Start by choosing the travel period and the number of days, then review the available flights. January to April is the relevant season. Outside those months, dog sledding should not be treated as a confirmed part of the itinerary.

The winter season also overlaps with the period for seeing the northern lights. They can be visible from September to April, which means the full dog-sledding season falls within the northern-lights period. Visibility still depends on natural conditions, including cloud cover, and cannot be guaranteed by staying for a set number of nights.

Best time to visit Ilulissat

There is no single period that suits every trip. We normally choose the dates according to the main activity:

  • January to April is the dog-sledding season in Ilulissat. These months also fall within the northern-lights season.
  • Mid-June to August is when humpback whales are present in Disko Bay, making it the relevant period for whale safaris.
  • In summer, around a hundred large icebergs can gather at the mouth of the Icefjord. Summer also has the highest frequency of direct jet flights between Copenhagen and Nuuk for travellers using that route.
  • September to April is the period when the northern lights can be visible. Weather and cloud cover determine whether they appear, so they should be treated as a possibility rather than a fixed programme item.
  • Over Christmas and New Year, and from 1 to 27 March 2027, direct Copenhagen–Ilulissat flights are scheduled for both Mondays and Wednesdays.

For a trip combining dog sledding and the possibility of northern lights, January to April is the clear overlap. To combine whale safaris with summer icebergs in Disko Bay, use the period from mid-June to August. Whale safaris and dog sledding cannot be fitted into the same short seasonal trip because their operating periods do not overlap.

Boat trips must be planned according to current conditions, as must other outdoor activities in an Arctic climate. We generally prefer an itinerary with one principal activity and at least one open opportunity to move it. A schedule in which every hour is committed leaves little room when weather affects the original plan.

Where to stay in Ilulissat

When choosing accommodation in Ilulissat, location and the shape of the itinerary are more useful starting points than a long list of facilities. First check how many nights are actually available between arrival and departure, as well as the starting time of the main activity. You can then choose between a standard room, additional space for a longer visit, or accommodation where you can prepare some of your own meals.

A room facing the water or ice may be appealing, but the view should not replace time by the Icefjord or on a boat. A window gives one fixed perspective. On land and from the water, distances and angles change, making the geography of the fjord easier to understand.

Before buying the final flights, we would also check the accommodation’s cancellation terms and exact address. This is particularly useful for a journey with several flight sectors. Do not choose a place solely from a photograph of the ice. Check whether it suits the number of nights, the amount of luggage and the activities that matter most for the stay.

Practical advice for a first visit

Pack in layers. A warm base layer, an insulating middle layer and a windproof and water-resistant outer layer make it easier to adjust when moving between indoor spaces, land and boats. A hat and gloves are relevant in cold weather, while sturdy footwear is more useful than shoes intended only for town. For winter travel, clothing needs to suit Arctic temperatures and extended periods outdoors.

A boat trip can feel colder than conditions on land because you are close to both water and ice. Carry an additional layer even if the temperature in town feels milder. For a winter activity, ask what outer equipment is included before departure so that you know what to bring yourself. This is a practical detail that should be confirmed rather than guessed.

Keep the main activities separate when building the itinerary. Ilulissat Icefjord boat tours, whale safaris in Disko Bay and dog sledding in Ilulissat serve different purposes and operate in different seasons. For a first visit, it is usually easier to choose one main activity and then add whatever is appropriate for the month.

Check the flight schedule again close to departure. Direct Copenhagen service begins with the opening of Ilulissat’s own airport during 2026 and normally operates on Wednesdays, with additional Monday flights in the specified winter periods. If travelling through Nuuk, both the international flight and Air Greenland’s domestic connection to Ilulissat need to fit the itinerary.

Finally, we do not recommend measuring the stay by the number of booked activities. Ilulissat already sits beside Disko Bay and the mouth of the Icefjord, and much of the visit consists of seeing the same geography from different places and in different conditions. A day on the water, time on land and a spare day for weather often make a more workable plan than three tours that all depend on the same narrow window.
