Whale Watching in Ilulissat
A whale safari from Ilulissat is a boat trip into Disko Bay that focuses on finding whales during the departure. The main period to go is from mid-June to August, when humpback whales are present in the bay.
Leaving Ilulissat for Disko Bay
A whale safari from Ilulissat begins and ends in town, with the trip taking place by boat in Disko Bay. The aim is to find whales on that particular day, so there is no fixed route that can be set out in advance. Whales move through the bay, and the boat’s course depends on where activity is being observed on the water.
That is the practical distinction between a whale safari and a general boat tour. On a whale safari, time is spent looking for whales and remaining in an area when they are seen. It is not a sightseeing circuit with a predetermined series of stops, and it should not be treated as a substitute for a separate trip to the Ilulissat Icefjord.
The exact duration, type of boat and meeting time can vary between departures. We recommend checking the details for the specific trip rather than assuming that every whale safari from Ilulissat operates in the same way.
The mid-June to August season
Humpback whales are present in Disko Bay from mid-June to August. If whale watching is an important part of your visit to Ilulissat, this is the period to plan around. A trip outside these months can still include other boat tours, but it should not be planned on the basis of the same humpback whale season.
The season does not mean that conditions are identical every day. The presence of humpback whales in Disko Bay is also not a guarantee that they will be seen on a particular departure. Weather, conditions on the water and the location of the whales all affect what is possible on the day.
If your itinerary allows, we recommend placing the whale safari near the beginning of your stay. This leaves more room to manage changes to sailing plans without making the rest of the visit unnecessarily tight.
Roughly 15 whale species occur in Greenlandic waters overall. That figure should not be read as a list of species you can expect to see from Ilulissat. For this trip, the specific reason for choosing the period from mid-June to August is the presence of humpback whales in Disko Bay.
Whale sightings are never guaranteed
No whale safari from Ilulissat can guarantee a sighting, including in the middle of the humpback whale season. The operator can choose an area based on the day’s conditions and reported activity, but cannot determine when or where a whale will appear.
We think it is better to book with that expectation clearly understood. A whale safari is time on the water with the possibility of seeing whales; it is not a scheduled performance. If one particular sighting is essential to the entire trip, the itinerary becomes vulnerable. Spending several days in Ilulissat provides more flexibility, but even having access to several possible departures does not amount to a guarantee.
It also helps to be precise when comparing trips. A general boat tour and a whale safari can both take place in Disko Bay, but they do not necessarily have the same purpose. Before booking, check whether the departure is specifically planned as a whale safari, how long it lasts and what happens if conditions change.
What to bring
Conditions can feel milder in town, but clothing for the boat should be suitable for an Arctic climate and time on an open bay. Our general Greenland packing list covers layers, footwear and equipment for boat trips and whale safaris in more detail. If the chosen operator provides any particular equipment, this should be stated in the trip information and checked before departure.
A camera or mobile phone is enough for most travellers. Binoculars can also be useful, but remember that the boat will be moving. Keep equipment simple, make sure it can be put away quickly and protect it from water.
If you are prone to seasickness, prepare before the trip and follow the precautions you normally use. It is less practical to address the issue only after the boat has left Ilulissat.
Bring only what you can keep together. A small bag is generally more manageable than several loose items, particularly when your attention is moving between the water, the boat and your camera.
Planning, timing and price
A whale safari from Ilulissat cost from around 1,400 DKK for about three hours in August 2026, according to the prices we found published. This is an approximate starting price, not a fixed price for every departure. The actual price depends on the selected departure and should be confirmed when booking.
Check the trip duration, meeting requirements and the rules for changes or cancellations. We do not recommend scheduling a whale safari immediately before a flight or another activity that cannot be moved. Boat travel in Greenland should be planned with enough room for conditions to alter the day’s programme.
If you also want to visit the Ilulissat Icefjord, plan that as a separate part of the stay. The icefjord has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, and around a hundred large icebergs can gather at the fjord mouth in summer. A trip focused on the icefjord has a different setting and purpose from a boat trip that goes out to look for humpback whales. Keeping the two plans separate avoids assuming that one departure will necessarily cover both.
Who the trip is suitable for
A whale safari is best suited to travellers who accept that neither the route nor the sightings can be decided in advance. You need to be prepared for time on a boat in Arctic conditions, including periods spent searching without any immediate observations.
Anyone with specific requirements concerning mobility, boarding or time on board should clarify them before booking. Boats and practical arrangements vary, and we would not assume that every departure is suitable for every traveller.
The most reliable approach is to settle the main practical questions before arriving for the trip: whether the dates fall within the mid-June to August season, what clothing is required, how much time will be spent on the water and what the operator does if conditions change. Most importantly, book on the understanding that humpback whales are present in Disko Bay during the season, but that a sighting on your departure can never be promised.
