The experience
The qajaq is a Greenlandic invention — for a thousand years it has been the boat of this coast, built for exactly this kind of water. On this guided paddle you'll sit low in a stable sea kayak and cover the calmer channels near the mouth of the Ilulissat Icefjord, kept at a safe, respectful distance from the bergs themselves.
Kayaking runs as a summer activity from June to September, and every departure is matched to the day's wind, current and ice conditions, and to the group's experience. You'll get a short dry-land introduction on strokes, balance and rescue basics before launching, so even paddlers new to sea kayaking can join with confidence.
This is a small-group trip — never more than 8 guests — led by a certified sea-kayak guide who reads the fjord daily. Expect quiet water, the low creak of drifting ice, and a paddler's-eye view of Disko Bay you simply can't get from a boat deck.

What you get
Step by step
Meet your guide, get fitted with a dry suit and life jacket, and run through paddle strokes, balance and rescue basics on land before ever touching the water.
Carry the kayaks down to the water, get settled into your seat and spray skirt, and paddle out from the shore in a tight group with your guide.
Work your way along sheltered water near the mouth of the Ilulissat Icefjord, your guide reading wind and current and calling the route as you go.
Raft up at a safe distance from the drifting bergs for a rest, some photos and a paddler's-eye look at the ice up close.
Paddle back to shore, help haul the kayaks in, and warm up with a hot drink while your guide answers questions about the qajaq's history.
Practical
No prior kayaking is required, but you should be reasonably fit and comfortable on open water — this is active paddling for up to four hours, not a scenic drift. A dry-land briefing covers strokes, balance and rescue basics, and you'll be seated in a stable sit-in sea kayak built for calm-water touring, not a tippy sport boat.
Safety comes first on this fjord: trips are cancelled or rerouted when wind, current or ice conditions aren't right, even if that means a shorter paddle or a different stretch of water than planned. Your guide makes that call on the day, not in advance.

Questions
No prior experience is required. You'll get a dry-land briefing on strokes, balance and rescue basics before launching, and you'll paddle a stable sit-in sea kayak built for calm-water touring. You should be reasonably fit and comfortable being active on open water for up to four hours.
Safety comes first on the fjord. If wind, current or ice conditions aren't suitable, your guide may reroute to a more sheltered stretch of water, shorten the paddle, or — in poor conditions — cancel the trip entirely. Weather cancellations come with a free rebooking or a full refund, automatically.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure — cancel from your booking confirmation and the refund is issued to your original payment method within 3–5 business days. Inside 24 hours the booking is non-refundable, except for operator weather or ice cancellations, which are always fully refunded.
Yes — this trip is for guests aged 15 and up only. The pace, gear and rescue procedures are built around adult and teenage paddlers, and there's no reduced-length option for younger children. Guests under 18 must be accompanied by a paying adult.
Close enough to appreciate their scale, never close enough to be at risk. Icebergs can roll or calve without warning, so your guide keeps the group at a safe, legal distance at all times — this is a guided viewpoint, not an up-close approach.
You'll wear a dry suit and life jacket throughout, and the sit-in kayaks used on this trip are stable and hard to capsize in calm water. That said, basic water comfort is expected — if you're not confident being on open water at all, this may not be the right trip for you.
