The experience

Three hours among the giants of Disko Bay

Every summer, humpback, fin and minke whales return to Disko Bay to feed in some of the richest Arctic waters on Earth. From June to September, the bay off Ilulissat becomes one of the world's most reliable places to meet them — humpbacks up to 15 metres long and 30 tonnes, lunge-feeding, fluking and occasionally breaching within sight of the boat.

You'll sail from Ilulissat harbour in a small, heated boat with a maximum of 12 guests, past the mouth of the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord, where skyscraper icebergs calve from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier and drift out to sea. Your local guide reads the water for blows and flukes — and shares how Greenlanders have lived alongside these whales for a thousand years.

Sightings in season are very likely, but never guaranteed — these are wild animals in a vast bay. What is guaranteed: a front-row seat to the icefjord itself, hot drinks in hand, and a crew that knows exactly where to look.

Step by step

Your 3 hours on the water

  1. Meet at Ilulissat harbour & safety briefing

Meet your guide at the pontoon, get fitted with life jackets and hear the plan for the day — where the whales were seen this morning.

  2. Sail out past the icefjord mouth

Leave the harbour and cruise along the edge of the Ilulissat Icefjord, threading between drifting icebergs the size of buildings.

  3. Into Disko Bay feeding grounds — whale watching

The heart of the trip. The captain cuts the engine near the feeding grounds; you watch for blows, flukes and — with luck — a full breach.

  4. Return along the coast

An unhurried cruise back with the icefjord on the horizon — the light over the bergs is often the best photo of the day.

  5. Back at Ilulissat harbour

Step ashore in the centre of town — cafés, the icefjord boardwalk and the Icefjord Centre are all within walking distance.

What if we don't see whales?

Honestly: in season, sightings are very likely — our guides find whales on the great majority of summer sailings. But these are wild animals and no sighting can ever be guaranteed.

If the whales stay hidden, you'll still have spent three hours cruising the mouth of a UNESCO World Heritage icefjord among some of the largest icebergs in the northern hemisphere — a trip many guests rate five stars on its own.

Three humpbacks within the first hour, one of them fluking maybe 40 metres from the boat. The captain cut the engine and we just listened to the blows echo off the icebergs. Best three hours of our entire Greenland trip.

Little heated boat, only nine of us, guide who genuinely knew the bay. We saw fin whales feeding and sailed right along the edge of the icefjord. Kids (7 and 10) were glued to the rail the whole time.

Booked the evening slot and had golden light on the icebergs the entire way out. One breach — one! — and I still can't believe I caught it on camera. Hot cocoa on deck while whales surfaced around us. Surreal.

Whales kept their distance on our sailing — a few blows and one distant fluke. But the crew was upfront about it, worked hard to find them, and the icefjord alone was worth the ticket. Would go again in July.

Questions

Frequently asked

No — and any tour that promises otherwise isn't being straight with you. In June–September sightings are very likely: humpback, fin and minke whales feed in Disko Bay all summer and our captains share sighting reports daily. But they're wild animals, so we say "very likely", never "guaranteed". The icefjord cruise is spectacular either way.

Safety comes first on Arctic water. If the captain cancels for wind, fog or sea state, you choose between a free rebooking to another departure or a full refund — automatically, no forms. You'll be notified by email and SMS as early as possible, usually the evening before.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure — cancel from your booking confirmation and the refund is issued to your original payment method within 3–5 business days. Inside 24 hours the booking is non-refundable, except for operator weather cancellations, which are always fully refunded.

Yes — all ages are welcome and children under 12 sail at half price (375 DKK). The boat has a heated indoor cabin for warming up, child-size life jackets, and the 3-hour length is manageable for most kids. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times on deck.

None at all — this is an easy, guided boat trip. If you can step from a pontoon onto a boat, you can join. The crew handles everything else, and the guide briefs you on where to stand and what to watch for before you leave the harbour.

Disko Bay in summer is usually calm — the icebergs act as natural breakwaters and tours don't run in rough seas. Most guests feel nothing at all. If you're sensitive, take a standard seasickness tablet 30–60 minutes before departure and stay on deck watching the horizon; the fresh air helps.
