The experience

Two and a half hours weaving through the icefjord

Ilulissat sits at the mouth of a fjord that produces more ice than almost anywhere else on the planet. From May to October, our small heated boat slips out of the harbour and threads a course through Disko Bay's drifting icebergs — some as small as a car, others taller than the buildings back in town — on their slow journey out to the open Atlantic.

This isn't a wildlife safari and it isn't a lecture; it's simply the best way to be close to the ice itself. Your guide picks a route based on the day's conditions, easing in near arches, caves and blue seams carved by decades of pressure, while explaining how the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier feeds this UNESCO World Heritage icefjord faster than any other glacier outside Antarctica.

Expect open deck time for photos, a warm cabin when the wind picks up, and a crew that has spent years reading which bergs are safe to approach and which to give a wide berth. Hot drinks are onboard throughout — this is Arctic sightseeing, not an endurance test.

Step by step

Your 2.5 hours on the water

  1. Meet at Ilulissat harbour & safety briefing

Meet your guide at the pontoon, get fitted with life jackets and hear how today's route through the bay will run.

  2. Out past the icefjord mouth

Leave the harbour and follow the edge of the Ilulissat Icefjord, where the biggest bergs run aground before drifting free.

  3. Weaving through Disko Bay

The heart of the trip. The captain threads a careful path between icebergs, slowing for arches, caves and striking blue ice.

  4. Open deck & photo time

A slower stretch with the engine idling near the calmest ice — the best window for photos and simply taking it in.

  5. Back at Ilulissat harbour

Step ashore in the centre of town — cafés, the icefjord boardwalk and the Icefjord Centre are all within walking distance.

What about the weather?

Disko Bay is usually calm in the sailing season, but the captain makes the final call on wind and sea state — safety comes before the schedule, every time. Most departures run exactly as planned.

If conditions force a cancellation, you're never left guessing: you get a free rebooking or a full refund, decided by you, with the notice sent as early as possible — usually the evening before.

We got so close to a huge blue-veined iceberg that everyone on deck went quiet at once. The captain clearly knew exactly which bergs were stable to approach. Worth every krone.

Small boat, only ten of us, heater running when we ducked inside to warm up. The route through the bay felt different every twenty minutes — new bergs, new light. Our guide's commentary on the glacier was genuinely interesting, not scripted.

Lovely trip and a friendly crew, though it was windier than expected so we stayed further from the biggest bergs than I'd hoped. Still beautiful, and they explained the safety call clearly rather than just cutting the trip short.

Booked this as a quieter alternative to the whale safari and it delivered — no rush, plenty of time on the open deck, and the icefjord itself is reason enough to go. Hot cocoa on a cold morning was a nice touch too.

Questions

Frequently asked

Yes — this trip focuses on the icefjord and Disko Bay's icebergs rather than whale watching, so the route stays closer to the ice and there's no time spent idling in open water waiting for sightings. It's a shorter, calmer sailing at 2.5 hours, and a great option if you've already done a whale safari or simply prefer ice to wildlife.

Safety comes first on Arctic water. If the captain cancels for wind, fog or sea state, you choose between a free rebooking to another departure or a full refund — automatically, no forms. You'll be notified by email and SMS as early as possible, usually the evening before.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure — cancel from your booking confirmation and the refund is issued to your original payment method within 3–5 business days. Inside 24 hours the booking is non-refundable, except for operator weather cancellations, which are always fully refunded.

Yes — all ages are welcome and children under 12 sail at half price (395 DKK). The boat has a heated indoor cabin for warming up, child-size life jackets, and the 2.5-hour length suits most kids well. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times on deck.

As close as it's safe to get, which changes daily. Our captains follow strict distance guidelines around unstable ice and never approach a berg that shows signs of rolling or calving, but on a calm day you'll often be near enough to see the texture and colour of the ice in real detail.

Disko Bay in summer is usually calm — the icebergs act as natural breakwaters and tours don't run in rough seas. Most guests feel nothing at all. If you're sensitive, take a standard seasickness tablet 30–60 minutes before departure and stay on deck watching the horizon; the fresh air helps.
